E.S. Carter was born in the town of Manchester, England in 1892. She studied medicine at Oxford University, qualifying in 1920. She practiced medicine in London for four years before she married and moved to India where she continued her career as a medical doctor

During this time, she also trained as an author and published her first book "A Mother's Story" (1926). Her second book, "The Garden Party" (1927) was an instant success. She went on to publish 11 more novels during the next three decades.
These were all bestsellers about English country life and included "The Parson's Daughter" (1928), "The Hilary Inheritance" (1929), "Poppy's Progress" (1931), "A Woman Alone" (1933), "The Scented Garden" (1934), "The Story of Mary Antin" (1935) and the highly acclaimed novels "The Nonesuch". E.S. Carter died in 1977, leaving behind a legacy of over twenty-five novels which sold over 15 million copies worldwide.
